Four key steps to implement to learn French from scratch (As a total beginner on her way to becoming fluent):
1) Just start!
It can feel very overwhelming at first to start learning a new language. After all, it is a completely new concept for our brains to get to grips with as It requires us to use completely new parts of our brains and to stimulate areas that haven’t had experience with these new sounding words before. Make a plan and commit yourself to doing a short amount per day to start. I started off by committing to doing 30 minutes minimum per day.
2) Learn the very basics first!
As a beginner starting from complete scratch, first you’ll want to focus on learning how to say a few words about yourself (e.g. your birthday, age, name, where you live). Then memorise it. I was surprised at how quickly I began to memorise those basic sentences about myself within week 1.
3) Speak it out loud!
Even if you don’t have anyone to practice with, I can’t stress the importance of speaking the words out loud! It’s so important for pronunciation and confidence purposes.
4) Repetition, repetition!
As with anything, the key to mastering a new skill is to repeat and repeat. Show up on the days even when you don’t feel like it. Even if you don’t manage to do as much as you’d like to, those 10 minutes here and there add up and you prove to yourself that you aren’t a quitter. It’s time to get serious about your goals!
